Dog training is something that almost all dog owners do at some time or another. There may be times, however, whenever special circumstances make it necessary for you to use a dog harness. Dog harnesses come in almost every shape and size and depending on what you need it for, you may need to make a particular choice. Here are some of the different dog harnesses that are available, what you should be looking for in the dog harness and why you would need one in the first place.

Don't harnesses are basically available for dogs which you may have a difficult time controlling. It may also be that you simply do not like to have your dog controlled by a single strap collar that is worn around their neck. Although it is a good idea for you to do some obedience training so that you dog is not pulling at his collar, it is an acceptable alternative to get a dog harness so they do not cause themselves injury while they are undergoing training.

As far as the type of dog harnesses that you can get, they really come in almost every shape and size. Some of them are rather simple and are nothing more than a couple of straps, one that goes underneath their chin in the chest area and the other which wraps behind their front legs. These dog harnesses are usually adjustable and are relatively inexpensive. The good part about them is that they are very effective in controlling your dog and make a great alternative to a single strap dog collar that is worn around the neck. Dog harnesses also come with special padding for on the chest area which can help you to control a dog that is especially aggressive at times, such as a police dog.

There are also dog harnesses that are available for almost every breed and size of dog. I've seen these harnesses that can fit onto a dog as small as a Chihuahua and others that can fit on a bull mastiff. If you do not need the dog harness to be used for working dog, you might want to consider getting something that is a little bit customized. A lot of people go for these customized dog harnesses in order to make their dog look good. To be honest, it doesn't really affect the training of the dog in the but many owners like to do it this way, nonetheless.

Good Dog. Stay.

The life of a good dog is like the life of a good person, only shorter and more compressed, writes Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anna Quindlen about her beloved black Labrador retriever, Beau. With her trademark wisdom and humor, Quindlen reflects on how her life has unfolded in tandem with Beaus, and on the lessons shes learned by watching him: to roll with the punches, to take things as they come, to measure herself not in terms of the past or the future but of the present, to raise her nose in the air from time to time and, at least metaphorically, holler, I smell bacon!

Of the dog that once possessed a catchers mitt of a mouth, Quindlen reminisces, there came a time when a scrap thrown in his direction usually bounced unseen off his head. Yet put a pork roast in the oven, and the guy still breathed as audibly as an obscene caller. The eyes and ears may have gone, but the nose was eternal. And the tail. The tail still wagged, albeit at half-staff. When it stops, I thought more than once, then well know.

Heartening and bittersweet, Good Dog. Stay. honors the life of a cherished and loyal friend and offers us a valuable lesson on our four-legged family members: Sometimes an old dog can teach us new tricks.
Customer Review: I balled my eyes out!
Life has been stressful lately and I was in need of a good cry. I just happened to pull this book off my shelf and it turned out to be the perfect tonic. Short, sweet and full of wonderful photos. Anyone who has experienced the love of a good dog will get something from "Good Dog. Stay." Linda C. Wright Author, One Clown Short One Clown Short
Customer Review: too short, not much substance
I was excited to read this at first, but soon became disappointed at the lack of substance. I wanted to know more about the dog and it's life with the family. I also didn't like how they wouldn't use the term "mommy" or "daddy" when referring to themselves. I'm my dog's "mommy" and my husband is "daddy". She is just as part of our family as a human child.

Skin lumps are very common in dogs. There are a whole range of possible scenarios that can present as a lump on the skin, including, insect bites and stings, abscesses, hematomas, cysts, soft tissue swelling following trauma and benign or malignant tumors. Tumors are probably the most common of these, but two thirds of them are benign and therefore merely cosmetic. Here we look at the most common types of tumor affecting the skin and subdermis in dogs, and what, if any, treatment they require.

When presented with a skin tumor, a veterinarian has 2 issues to deal with.

1 Is it a type of tumor that requires surgical removal

2 Is further treatment required once it has been removed

Some skin tumors are so obviously benign that a vet will not even bother to biopsy it, let alone recommend removal. These are the small wart like tumors that are often attached by a narrow strip of skin. All skin tumors that do not fit this category though should be subjected to a fine needle aspiration (inserting a needle into the lump, sucking out some cells and characterising them under a microscope) or a surgical biopsy. This will determine whether or not complete removal is necessary, and define the prognosis.

A thorough clinical examination is important to assess both the tumor and the patient as a whole. A veterinarian will study the tumor with respect to its size, position and appearance, and examine the local and regional lymph nodes to look for any evidence of metastasis.

What is the difference between benign and malignant tumors?

Benign tumors are generally slow growing and may change little over the course of a year. They usually have a clear margin and cause the dog little trouble, but they can occasionally cause discomfort if they become ulcerated or start to bleed following self trauma.

Malignant tumors often grow rapidly over a few weeks. They tend to become ulcerated early in their course and they can infiltrate surrounding tissues, therefore seeming fixed and less moveable than benign tumors.

BENIGN SKIN TUMORS

Naevi and Skin Tags

These are not tumors, they are harmless, well marginated stable skin growths that are present at birth, but can grow in old age.

Warts and Papillomas

These are benign tumors that may grow spontaneously or may be triggered by a virus.

Sebaceous Cysts

These are common in dogs (around 7% of all skin tumors). They are not tumors, but accumulations of sebum within the gland due to a blocked duct, which can often be resolved by squeezing it.

Sebaceous Hyperplasia

This is proliferation of the sebaceous tissue mentioned above to form cauliflower like warts that may become traumatised, ulcerate and bleed. They are very common in old Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. Surgical excision or cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen is curative.

Basal Cell Tumor

More common in cats than dogs. Usually presents as a domed, well marginated hairless pink mass in the skin. They tend to be moveable over underlying structures and are slow growing. Surgical excision is curative.

Histiocytoma

Usually seen in juvenile dogs around 18months old, though can occur at any age. They grow rapidly over about 6 weeks to a maximum size of around 2cm, and are domed hairless lumps within the skin that can ulcerate. The key step for the veterinarian is to differentiate histiocytomas from mast cell tumors (see later), which can be easily done via a fine needle aspirate. Surgical excision or cryotherapy is curative for histiocytomas, and many will disappear of their own accord without treatment.

BENIGN SUBCUTANEOUS TUMORS

Lipoma

The lipoma is the most common subcutaneous tumor in dogs. It is a well defined, well circumscribed mass with a soft rubbery texture to it. They are slow growing and a very common occurrence in older overweight dogs. They can occur both on the trunk or on the limbs, and though they are completely benign, occasionally they can become so large that they are a nuisance to the dog and only then is surgical excision necessary. Before assuming a lump is a lipoma, it is good practice to have a veterinarian perform a fine needle aspirate on the lump as one or two other tumors can mimic a lipoma, such as certain presentations of mast cell tumors (see below) and hemangiopericytomas.

MALIGNANT SKIN TUMORS

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This is a common malignant tumor in both cats and dogs. It usually occurs on relatively hairless non pigmented skin and can be triggered by long or repeated exposure to UV light. Surgical excision is usually curative if good margins are achieved, and those cases with incomplete margins benefit from post operative radiotherapy to kill the remaining cancer cells. Some squamous cell carcinomas are very difficult to remove though, such as a nasty infiltrative form which occurs on the nasal planum. Chemotherapy has been used for this tumor type with mixed results.

Melanomas

Relatively common in dogs. The majority are benign and surgical excision is curative. However, those that arise on the nail bed, scrotum or mucocutaneous junction (e.g. on the lips) are usually malignant. Surgical excision is mandatory.

Mast Cell Tumors

These are amongst the most common of skin tumors in dogs. They have a wide range of appearance and behavior, making them sometimes challenging to diagnose and treat. About 10 per cent of dogs suffer them at multiple sites.

Mast cells occur naturally in the skin, performing an important function in releasing histamine and heparin in response to various allergic stimuli. Like any cell line, mutations can occur where the cells start to divide uncontrollably, forming a tumor. If a mast cell tumor is squeezed it will therefore release histamine and cause a wheal reaction on the skin. Histamine can also cause vomiting so affected dogs may present with upset stomachs.

If a mast cell tumor is confirmed on a fine needle aspirate, it should be surgically excised as soon as conveniently possible. In cases of well marginated tumors that are caught fairly early, this is usually curative. Margins of 2 to 3cm are advised. However, higher grade tumors tend to be aggressively invasive and complete excision is not always feasible. In these cases, partial excision together with radiotherapy or chemotherapy is the treatment of choice.

Dogs that have had mast cell tumors tend to be predisposed to getting them again in the future, even if they are surgically excised promptly. Therefore, owners of such dogs should meticulously examine their dogs skin at periodic intervals to search for any suspicious lumps.

Girls' Dog PJ Set - Green

My Border Collie, Emma, was overweight. Family members started to call her "Pudgy," and "Rolly-Poly, " and laughed when she wouldn't move even to bark. She even developed a way to twirl around in a sitting position rather than get up to see what was going on around her.

While her adjustments to her added weight seemed funny, it started to become clear that her health was in danger. Most of us don't want to believe that our pet is fat. In our eyes, they are oh-so perfect. A good test is to rub their tummy, along their ribs if you can't feel their ribs, then you have a tubby on your hands! But don't despair.

In just four months our Emma has lost 13 pounds. It really wasn't all that hard to get her to lose that weight and now we have a healthier and more active pooch. You can do the same! Where do you start?

First. record what you feed him or her for a few days, including treats. You probably don't realize just how much you are actually feeding your dog. After you've recorded the food you are giving your baby start eliminating the extras! Cut out the snacks or replace them with healthy alternatives (my dog loves to chew on raw carrots), always checking with reliable sources to make sure whatever you feed isn't toxic for dogs.

Watch other family members! Your best efforts can be compromised if someone is sneaking treats on the side. Make sure that everyone at home realizes just how serious obesity is to your pets' health. Everyone in the house has to realize that love actually equals less food!

Take that dog out for a walk! Make sure you are giving your pet a chance to exercise. Walking will speed up the metabolism and help to lose that excess weight. Grab that leash, and bring your dog along - even if you were thinking of going out for a short walk by yourself. Don't be surprised if your dog gets tired a lot at first especially if your pet hasn't been exercising much. Give those doggie muscles and bones a chance to build up! Slowly increase your walks, and you will have a slimmer dog companion.

Your dog's health will improve and so will yours and those walks will make both your dog and you - very happy, too.

Dog beds have become an ultra-popular pet accessory in todays society. The influx of pet owners who love and cherish their pet has created a significant demand for a once laughed at idea. When purchasing a dog bed there are several things to keep in mind such as; type of dog bed, price range you are comfortable in, quality of the material used and any special circumstances surrounding your pet. This article will give you the information needed to make an informed purchasing decision.

There are actually many types of dog beds and they all have different characteristics that may or may or not suit your pet. Obviously, there are small, medium and large dog beds, but there are also heated and cooling pet beds, as well as, orthopedic dog beds for aging or disabled pets. For the more sophisticated pet owner, designer and luxury pet beds are also an option. Regardless of your purchasing choice, price usually plays a significant role in your decision making process.

The type of dog bed you buy will directly influence the price. For small or medium dog beds with no extra bells and whistles, you can expect to spend anywhere from 20-50 dollars. However, if you wish to have a heated, cooled or orthopedic bed, the price can go up to twice that amount. For the even more extravagant choices such as luxury or designer dog beds, you can literally spend thousands of dollars if you so choose. These beds often come standard with wooden frames, pillows and blankets. When money is no object, the designer dog beds reign supreme. As is often the case, price and quality go hand in hand and although you can buy good beds fairly cheap, you need to pay attention to the quality of materials that go in to your pets furniture.

The last thing you want to do is purchase a pet bed only to have it tear up in a few weeks. When purchasing a bed be sure to check on things like double stitching and quality fabric. Other necessities are removable covers for easy washing and stain resistant material. Many beds will come with cheap or imitation fleece, so be sure to check the quality of the material and always look for double-sided fleece, as it is more durable and more comfortable. While quality is important, if you have a dog with special needs or you live in a particular area, you may want to narrow your search with those criteria first.

As is often the case, our dogs have complex lives. Some are injured or handicapped while others may be old or extremely dirty. Regardless of your situation, there are several things to consider. If you live in an area with extreme temperatures, you may want to consider a heated or cooling pet bed. There are several types of cooled beds, some are raised from the floor, some are filled with water and some are activated by other materials. The heated pet beds are usually similar to an electric blanket. Dogs that are old or injured may need an orthopedic pet bed to rest their tired joints on. These beds come with double-sided foam and extremely comfortable fleece or other material. As a pet owner, you realize each pet has its own personal needs and if you keep this in mind you will find a quality, well-suited bed for your pet.

Purchasing a pet bed can be a daunting task if you are misinformed or not sure of your specific options. If you keep your focus on the type, quality, price and special needs, you should be able to narrow down your search pretty quickly. As the pet owner, you know your dogs needs the best. Hopefully this article will help expedite your decision making process.

Marc Ecko Breakout and For Life Cardigans

Marc Ecko remakes the cardigan in these screen printed sweaters with lots of cool embellishments.

I was born in the streets of Malibu,
You have perhaps heard that name a couple of times,
They say the world's hottest parties go on out there,
But for me, there was only cold snow.....
As for my appetite, I had to do with some stale meat loaf,
That the local butcher used to throw away from a back door,
That is if I was lucky; otherwise... use your imagination.

Then there was Mat, who tried often to steal that too,
He was a one frail, starved and crazy cat, but it is not in my nature to show mercy,
So I fought it off, often with a few scratches here and there.
It hadn't always been this way; there was Jerry I remember...
There was his cosy bed, there were his many games too,
My friends (I don't know where they are now) were jealous because I lived with Jerry,
Or maybe because I lived in a house that resembled a palace,
They kept me as a 'pet';

They called me 'Deutsche': whatever that meant,
But then I got too old, they thought, I wasn't 'fit' any more to be a pet,
"You can always get yourself a new one", Jerry's mom's said,
"These things come and go, this one is too stupid and old for your games now..."
Sure enough, I found myself on the Malibu street: 48B once again,
A place for tattered old buildings, garbage cans and unfortunate selves like myself.

It has been seven years since that winter's night...
I was taking a casual walk along the denser forest road some way off from Malibu,
That was where the six hounds caught me off my guard, and laid an ambush,
I don't know their reasons, only that they came at me from everywhere;
But it is not in my nature to turn tail and run, so I went for one's throat,
And split it open, blood streamed down like in a mystical stream on to that moonlit jungle path,
Perhaps they had never seen their own blood before... they ran away.

It was a week from then that I finally admitted to having sustained serious injuries,
I remember that night- an exceptionally cold night; the following morning- I never woke up.
So that was the story of my life,
But do you humans care? I'll tell you what....
I didn't make this trip back up for nothing:
It was to say that I see a bit of 'me' in 'you', way too much to say sooth,
You too are selfish, cruel, merciless and every other thing you can think of,
In common dog-speak, my story is pretty much yours too;
All that 'you and your humanity' has come to:
A Dog's Life...
You still think I am talking about a dog?

No More Dead Dogs

Nobody understands Wallace Wallace. This reluctant school football hero has been suspended from the team for writing an unfavorable book report of Old Shep, My Pal. But Wallace won't tell a lie-he hated every minute of the book! Why does the dog in every classic novel have to croak at the end? After refusing to do a rewrite, his English teacher, who happens to be directing the school play Old Shep, My Pal, forces him go to the rehearsals as punishment. Although Wallace doesn't change his mind, he does end up changing the play into a rock-and-roll rendition, complete with Rollerblades and a moped!
Customer Review: Gordon Korman does it again!
I read Gordon Korman's Everest and Island series with my dad last year in second grade. This year, however, I read NO MORE DEAD DOGS on my own and really loved it! The book has a nice mix of comedy, drama, and fun. Wallace Wallace is a hardheaded football player who has a grudge against Mr. F, his school's English teacher and theater director. This would be a good book to read if you like to laugh out loud. Gordon Korman breaks the comedy scale with this book!
Customer Review: Fun book
My 13 year old son had to read this book for a school book report. He very much enjoyed this book which made the report easier. I think he would say "read this book".

If you want to be a happy dog owner, you need to teach loose leash walking to your puppy. Often, dog owners found this is extremely difficult.

We interviewed few professional dog trainers and owners. In this article, you will find simple but helpful tips to train your dog to walk on a leash.

Why training loose leash walking to your puppy is difficult?

1.Puppies always pull you to go from one point to other because walking along with you is not a natural behavior of a dog.

2. It is a natural instinct of a dog to run whenever they see something exciting. Hence, teach a dog to walk on a leash is very important.

3. Training loose leash walking is challenging because you consider only your agenda but you do not pay any attention what your dog wants.

How to teach a dog or puppy to walk on a leash?

1. You need to train your puppy to wear collar. Initially, your puppy will feel discomfort but gradually your dog will accept it. You should not remove the collar because your dog is scratching it or barking. You should remove the collar only when the puppy is not trying to get out of it.

2. You puppy may overwhelm by an entire leash all at once. You should start initially with a string, shoelace and increase the length as your puppy gets used to it.

3. Play with your dog first before you start training him on walking on a leash. You should start with some fun game like run, fetch. You should reward your dog for a loose lease. Every time your dog does this, correctly praise him and give a treat.

4. Ignore bad behavior of your dog and never allow yourself to be pulled by your dog. You should stop whenever your dog pulls you. This will frustrate your dog and it will not pull you. You should practice your puppy walking on leash at least 5 minutes initially.

How you can learn this technique at your home?

Several dog owners recommended sit stay fetch dog training ebook and its training video as the best resource to train dog at home. You can read sit stay fetch review and interesting articles on dog behavior problems in my blog.

The Korean Jindo dog is a hunting breed that originated in Jindo Island in Korea. Although it is relatively unknown outside of Korea, it is highly celebrated and valued for its fierce loyalty and bravery. The Jindo is a medium sized dog, weighing between about 25 to 50 pounds. It is double-coated and looks like a spit-type dog. Two body styles, Gyupgae and Heutgae, exist. Gyupgae describes a shorter, compact, and more muscular body while Heutgae expresses a slender dog, with less depth of chest and a longer loin. Korean law only officially recognizes white and yellow Jindos as having correct coloration. However, the United Kennel Club recognizes five different coat colors of white, fawn, grey, black and tan, and brindle.

There is no written record of the history of the Jindo. However, experts agree that the Jindo dog originated on Jindo Island. They were probably bred to hunt wild boars, rabbits, badgers, and deer. They have also been known to hunt extremely dangerous animals, such as Siberian tigers. Jindos are one of three dog breeds known that has ever been able to hunt the tigers. They are renowned for their hunting ability due to their courage, cunning, and pack sensibility. There are anecdotal tales in Korea about owners being woken early in the morning to have their Jindo lead them to a deer they killed during the night. Stories also exist of intruding coyotes being killed by Jindos in the United States.

Another favorite tale about a Jindo dog occurred in 1993. Baekgu, a 7 year old female Jindo, was sold to a different owner in a town about 185 miles away from her original owner. She escaped her new home and traveled 7 months back to her old owner, arriving in a skin and bones condition. Baekgu became a national sensation and has a statue erected in her honor in Jindo County.

Jindo dogs are considered a national monument of Korea. They are protected under the Cultural Properties Protection Act under the "Jindo Preservation Ordinance." Additionally, the breed marched in the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized the breed in 1998 but the American Kenner Club still does not recognize the breed.

The Jindo dog is a loyal and friendly family pet. Because they are such a loyal species and a good watch dog, Jindos can be aggressive with strangers. If you are interested in learning more about how to handle this issue, this pet aggression website can provide helpful information.

Customer Review: Item good. Amazon bad
The item was fine, but due to a glitch in the system, I was sent two items instead of one. I sent the extra item back to Amazon within the required time period with an explanation of my dilema. I requested they notify me when item received and my credit card be credited the amount of the returned item purchase price. Upon receiving my package, they (Amazon) quickly repackaged the same item with my note attached and sent it back to me with NO explanation of why they wouldn't accept my return. I've done alot of business with Amazon in the past as well as all my family Membere. My daughter had mentioned to me that Amazon was difficult with returns, but I didn't think it would ever happen to me. None of us will ever purchase from them again. These items can be purchased directly from the manufacturer, or other retailers. No one needs to deal with Amazon. I also noticed they raised a few of their prices now that the holiday season is here. Thanks Amazon for showing your true colors!

I am now in the 8th grade, and I used this book for a speech competition with my friend. We got a superior (not to brag or anything). This book is probabally for kids from ages 5-8.

All Dogs Go to Heaven - The Series: Friends to the Rescue

After retrieving Gabriel's Horn in the 1996 movie, All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, the irrepressible German shepherd Charlie Barkin and his loyal dachsund sidekick, Itchy Itchiford, are not interested in returning to heaven; rather, they continue their canine adventures on Earth in MGM Animation's television series of the same name, which aired from 1996-1999. Both the movie sequel and television series are loosely based on Don Bluth's 1989 film, All Dogs Go To Heaven, though Bluth was not involved in these spinoff projects and the only returnee from the original film is Dom DeLuise (again voicing the part of Itchy). Set in present day San Francisco, the television series includes many of the characters from the film sequel, though Charlie and Sasha are now mostly friends, Charlie and Itchy live as bachelors, and Carface plays a lesser role. "Friends to the Rescue" is a DVD compilation of four 22-minute episodes from the show's first season, following the escapades of Charlie and Itchy as newly inducted guardian angels, assigned various "missions" by the watchful whippet archangel, Anabelle. Many of the voiceovers will be familiar including Sheena Easton (Sasha), Bebe Neuwirth (Annabelle), and Ernest Borgnine (Carface). The newcomer to the cast is Steven Weber who lends his voice as Charlie in a lineup of palatable (if not mildly bland) storylines offering tidy lessons in friendship and kindness. The best of the bunch is the humorous "Cyrano de Barkinac" when Itchy falls for a lovely pooch name Bess and enlists the help of "Charlie's Charm School" to win her favor. While Bluth's original film explored themes of crime, death, betrayal, and heaven in an artistically quirky musical format, these tales are straightforward Saturday morning fare reminiscent of Disney's Aristocats. --Lynn Gibson
Customer Review: All Dogs Go To Heaven: The Series
Great movie. A winner for fans of the original "All Dogs Go To Heaven" movies. My 8 yr old actually likes the television series like this better than the full-length movie. I agree. Great stories and charming characters. A must to have for families.

Dog grooming is an important time for both you and your dog - you should both enjoy the experience, you have a chance to increase the bond between you and it is a necessary part of maintaining the good health of your faithful companion. Pets need their human to care for them and they enjoy spending time with you.

The breed of your dog and the type of coat he has will determine how often he needs brushing and bathing. A short haired dog needs brushing twice a week to remove loose hair; a longer haired dog will need daily brushing to prevent matting of the coat. Grooming is a good time to check for any irregularities in the skin or the dog's condition, and if you find any problems contact your vet. Finding and treating symptoms early can be important.

When brushing you dog, always brush the same direction as the coat grows. Use proper grooming tools that are suited to the type of coat your dog has. If there are tangles, work from the edge of the tangle to gradually free the hair. Be careful on the tummy because dogs are very sensitive there and also on their ears. Frequent brushing keeps your dog looking shiny and healthy and you will proud to take him out for walks.

Some long haired dogs with a heavy undercoat will need to be combed after brushing, to remove dead fur which will matt if not kept under control. Water dogs, some gun dogs and dogs bred for cold climates are in this category. Use a comb in the same manner as a brush and make sure you have the correct tool for the job. Be gentle as combs can pull the skin.

Nail clipping is another important part of dog grooming. Nails that grow too long can cause foot problems. It can be a stressful activity for some dogs so it is helpful to start when your dog is still a puppy. Clip the nails often with dog nail clippers and take only the tip off each time to avoid injury.

Dogs have no way of keeping clean and so need a regular bath. Use warm water and a dog shampoo for bathing and make sure you have brushed him before the bath, as tangles are made worse by water. It is important to dry him well, especially around the chest and tummy, and taking him for a brisk walk is a great way to dry him off and reward him for his good behavior during his bath. Bath time is a good time to clean the dog's ears - use a cotton tip dipped in alcohol and clean around the parts of the ear that you can see. Never push into the ear canal.

Customer Review: waited and waited
it took almost 3 weeks to get this item so if your in a hurry you may want to look elsewhere, it finally arrived ,after I contacted seller and tried to cancel my order. It was way to big for my 3 lb dog so I altered it,,

I've been a dog lover since I was born (at least I want to think so) but out of 27 years of my life so far, I've only had one and only dog. Kiky was her name. Hence, I am not a dog expert like Cesar Milan but I know Kiky had a great and happy life and I think any dogs should too.

Yes, all dogs may be different and sometimes you just can't avoid in giving them some tough love but most of the time the real way in loving your dog is in the essence of showing that you care deeply for them. They know it. Somehow.

Kiky was a Miniature Pinscher. When my family discovered her, she was already 1 year old. My family totally had no experience in taking care of dogs. We didn't really have any manuals too. But what I know for sure, my family has whole lot of love to give and my parents are pretty much a disciplinarian too. Love with discipline had apparently been the core foundation in providing Kiky what she needs to live for 14 years. Yes, it's still an amazing age for a small dog like her. We are forever grateful for her perseverance to live longer than she should.

I realize there's no one right way in loving your dogs. You may put her in an LV bag or just $1 cushion, they will love you as much. They do earn the title man's best friend. I think human can't do as good as them.

How to love your dog?
Love is the key in everything.
Love doesn't mean you are spoiling them and keep giving them what they want.
Loving dogs mean you care for them and you want them to be happy and in return you too are happy.
If by loving the dogs you are losing your sanity, then that is not love. You may be better off without it.

What I can say when it comes to my family is that we know we have given the best we could and Kiky knew just that too. We don't give her any dog food. She ate what we ate. But that didn't stop her from living more than 10 years. We didn't bathe her with dog shampoo, she used what we used. And she had beautiful hair all over her body, shiny and smooth, even till the second she died. She didn't sleep on the floor or outside the house, she slept with us on the bed and she still behaved really well and not stepping on top of our head and made us crazy with her behaviors. Yes, my family had broken almost all rules in "how to keep a pet" guidebook, but we were happy and we were all one big family, with Kiky.

I guess the key in loving your dog is to remember he/she is a being too. If your intention of having a pet is not for a practical purpose such as keeping someone out of your lawn, then you may consider he/she as part of your family. Just like bringing up a kid, you'd like him/her to be the best he/she can be. A balance of fun and discipline is always needed.

Love your dog like you love yourself and each other. You'll be surprised how you'll be treated and thanked for. Though dog can't speak with words but they sure can convey their gratitude even after they have moved on to the after-life. How do I know that? I know, cause after 3 years Kiky has gone, I feel her every single day. That's when you know you've loved your dog the right way.

Dog food is very important for your dog's health and it is important that you chose the right food to feed your dog. Puppies need different food then adult dogs just as older dogs have different dietary needs. You may find certain food is making your dog very slow and laconic; this many times is a symptom of not using the right food. You can get advice on what types of food will be best for your dog from your veterinarian.

Good commercially made foods are formulated to work in your dog's digestive tract. Certain "people" food is just to rich for dogs and they cannot keep it down. Additionally some foods, such as chocolate, are actually poisonous to dogs. If you have regularly fed your dog "people" food from a young age then it will be very difficult to get the dog to eat commercial food. Dogs that were brought up on canned or bagged food will not have a problem though dogs still like their food to taste good. If it isn't tasty then they won't eat it.

All dry dog food should be stored in an airtight container. This seals in the aromas as well as keeping any bugs out of the food. If you leave a serving of dry food out, it will not spoil, but it may attract ants and other bugs or rodents. To keep canned food fresh you should cover and store it in your refrigerator. If it is left out it will attract flies and become stale. When feeding your dog the bowl should be on an easy to clean surface as you want to keep the dog bowl and feeding area as clean as possible. Dog bowls tend to be constructed of metal, ceramic and plastic.

Just as humans need certain foods so do dogs, but they have different nutritional requirements. Dogs need protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins to survive. Dogs do not actually need carbohydrates to survive but they are not true carnivores and cannot live on protein alone. In order to get a good nutritional balance dogs need a combination of protein, vegetables and cereals and dog food incorporates these into the dog food at varying percentages.

Pet food can be costly, particularly if you are purchasing premium brands. However there are enough types of dog foods available that you should be able to find a dog food that you dog like and that isn't to hard on your wallet. It is important to keep your dog as healthy as possible and feeding your dog the right dog food is an important part of their health.

The down on command is extremely important and can save your dog's life if properly trained. If for some reason, you have your dog off lead in a park and he sees a cat across the road, you will be very glad you trained him the down on command. Of cause it will take many repetitions before he will be so conditioned to stop in his tracks and go into a down position, when he actually wants to chase that kitty.

For your dog the down is a very passive thing, almost a negative thing. Normally they want action. So you should be careful when you work on the down so it does not become boring for the dog. The rewards that you use, your praise and treats, must be plentiful.

In competition Fido will always be at your left in the heel position and he should be able to do a down from the sit or stand position and also on the move. To start the training of the down, it does not really matter where Fido is in relation to yourself, because at this point you are only focussing on the down itself.

This is how you will teach your puppy to down:

Let him sit on your left or in front of you. Take a treat in your one hand and clicker in the other. With the treat lure him into the down position. You do that by holding your hand with the treat in front of his nose and moving your hand down to the floor. Normally it only takes a second. The moment he is in the down position, click and give the treat. Repeat that several times. At this stage you don't say a word, you don't give the command "down". After about 20 repetitions you can start giving the command as you lure him into position. Your hand movement should be very fast to encourage your dog to do fast downs.

Now after another 20 or more repetitions you can test your dog, by doing the hand movement but without a treat. Just give the command as you move your hand. The moment Fido goes into the down, click and give a bonus treat. Make a big fuss and repeat again a few more times. Do not try to progress too fast, but rather lay a solid foundation. If at any stage you test Fido and he does not respond quickly, go back a few steps.

Up to now, obviously, you have been bending down to lure your dog into the down position. Your back is aching and you are running out of pain killers. You do not want to bend over every time you give the down command. On the other hand Fido is not going to respond on the first down command if you all of a sudden don't bend down. So you need, or rather Fido needs, a transition period where you still bend down, but not as far. Here again, make a huge fuss and give lots of yummy treats if he responds correctly.

Always set your dog up for success and remember to keep training sessions short. Do not try to do the above in one session. It should be done over many sessions so the down command will almost be engrafted into your dog's mind. Only then will he immediately respond when you give the command even when he is actually chasing a cat.

Water Dogs: A Novel

Lewis Robinsons critically acclaimed story collection Officer Friendly was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as eleven letter-perfect stories with the keen understanding of human nature readers expect to find in works by veterans like Alice Munro. Now Robinson has written Water Dogs, a suspenseful, disquieting, and compulsively readable first novel that takes an unforgettable look at the delicate patchwork of a family.

Bennie knows that the details of his life dont show well. A twenty-seven-year-old college dropout with stalled ambitions, he works at an animal shelter and lives with his bullheaded older brother, Littlefield, in their old family home on Meadow Island, Maine, a house that has fallen into disrepair since their fathers untimely death several years earlier.

When a massive blizzard hits the state one Saturday afternoon, Bennie, Littlefield, and a crew of roughneck war-game enthusiasts decide to play paintball at the local granite quarry. Bennie accidentally falls into a gully, landing in the hospital, and wonders if his life can get any worse. But when one of the players disappears during the storm and Littlefield becomes the main suspect in the disappearance, Bennie realizes that the game might have had much higher stakes. Then Littlefield takes off without a word of explanation, forcing Bennie to seriously question his loyalty to his enigmatic brother. With the guidance of his intrepid girlfriend, Helen, and his twin sister, Gwen, Bennie goes looking for answers, embarking on a journey that brings him closer to a truth he may not want to discover. What he finds will change his family and his life forever.

Written in prose as arresting and spare as the novels rural Maine setting, Lewis Robinsons Water Dogs is a marvel of modern fiction, a book rich in empathy that follows one mans path through the uncertainties of youth and loss toward self-discovery.
Customer Review: The snowy shadows
Maine, in the winter. It's not exactly the happy vacationland we associate with the state during the sunny and warm months, so all the more reason to set a novel in the light-challenged snow of January or February. And light really is noteworthy here, because this brilliant first novel by Lewis Robinson, "Water Dogs", is presented in muted hues. That, in itself, helps the characters rise to passion. Those pesky twenty-somethings are growing up and with it comes paintball tournaments, early adult love, reflections of adolescence and, yes, intrigue. Robinson deftly splays his characters across sofas, beds and time and the result is as crisp a novel as the snow undertow. The story unfolds neatly, and his narrative always runs in a smooth fashion. "Water Dogs" is not to be read on the beach. It's a fireplace and blizzard type of book, and one I highly recommend. This is my first introduction to Lewis Robinson and I hope to read more of his works.

Owners search for years to find a way to stop dog from barking, often without any success. Now, here are some tips, which applied consistently and assertively, will help to stop the noise and distress for all time.

Naturally, it is essential to look at the reasons for the barking, and to determine whether there is anything obvious which is creating the problem.
Is your dog in distress, in pain or afraid? We all communicate with our dogs, but sometimes we may simply not be hearing exactly what it his that our companion is trying to tell us.

When a young puppy arrives for the first time, this can naturally be a very stressful time for it, as it tries to adapt to a completely new environment, If the dog is s rescued pet, then previous trauma with humans, often in an enclosed space of a room, can ignite old stresses and fears. Each of these situations will require some insight and some thought about what the individual dog needs, but above all, be patient and 'listen' to what your new friend is trying to tell you. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll 'tune in' to its needs.

If the barking remains an issue, the next move is to establish a clear understanding within the dog about how he or she is expected to perform within the relationship with you. To stop dog from barking, taking the dog through some basic training relating to when you want him/her to sit, stay, walk, etc. will help to create a clear understanding of the dynamics of the relationship. Many times, this alone will focus the dog's attention and enable it to function in a more relaxed way.

Naturally, there are times when barking is required from the dog. If you want the dog to perform a security role and to alert you of perceived danger, then barking is an appropriate response. In order for the dog to know when it is appropriate, he/she has to be shown. Again, this is where basic training comes in, when a reward arrangement can be established.

Training in advance of a crisis situation always creates the best results. Don't wait for your dog to become irritated before you decide to teach him/her the basics. If you have a puppy, decide to start a training program very early on as this will save you both hours of distress later in the dog's life.

Your relationship with your dog does not have to be filled with trauma. If you want to know more about how to stop dog from barking simply Click Here Now

So you think you want to own a beagle? There are few puppies as cute as a little black-and-white beagle! Beagles show up in movies as the perfect family pet. Beagles do make great family pets, but as with any pure bred dog, before purchasing a beagle make sure you learn a few things about the breed.

Beagles are generally a friendly dog breed. They do well with children. Beagles are inherently curious. When you see a beagle, chances are you will see it with its nose to the ground, tracking something. Because they were originally bred as hunting dogs, beagles track things constantly. This can create a problem for the beagle owner because beagles have a tendency to dig out of yards and run after something that they are tracking. Vets usually recommend beagles be implanted with ID chips because of their tendency to get out.

Beagles were bred to hunt in packs and they get lonely easily. A lonely beagle can become destructive, chewing on furniture, digging up gardens and destroying belongings. A lonely beagle will often howl as well. If you have fussy neighbors a beagle might not be the best option, because they will bark and howl at times and beagles have a very distinct howl. Beagles need a lot of exercise to keep them from becoming bored.

Beagle owners need to be careful about how much they feed their dogs. Beagles will eat whatever food is offered to them, no matter the amount. It is not uncommon for beagles to become quite obese. Beagle owners need to monitor food intake. Beagles cannot have unlimited amounts of food at their disposal because they will over eat.

Beagles are easy to groom because they have short hair. Their coat is traditionally tri-colored-brown, black and white. The tip of the beagle's tail is almost always white. They were bred this way to make them easy for hunters to spot in tall grass when hunting small game, like rabbits. Beagles shed a lot and a weekly brushing is a good grooming idea. As with all breeds that have hanging ears, beagles need to have their ears cleaned. Commercial ear cleaners are available for this purpose. If the owner does not keep the dog's ears clean, they can get an ear infection or ear mites. For indoor dogs, bathing once a month is usually sufficient.

The average lifespan of beagles is twelve to fifteen years. Before purchasing any pet, make sure you are ready to make a life-long commitment. As a breed, beagles can be stubborn and difficult to train. The best training method is to use food rewards. A beagle will do almost anything for food! Beagles are one of the most loving and amusing dog breeds. Their energetic personality and persistent curiosity is a constant source of delight for their owners. Beagles love to be around people and do very well with children. Most beagle owners fall in love quite quickly and find themselves beagle owners for life!

Invader Zim Gir in Dog Suit Rub-On Sticker (White)

Vinyl Rub Ons for windows, cars, etc. White has white lines and is best for tinted windows or dark surfaces. Actual Rub On approx. 6".

You have a dog that has a lot of fur you probably have been to the pet store quite a few times to find the perfect solution to end your shedding problems.

On the market you can find food that claims to eliminate shedding, shampoos and conditioners. You undoubtedly have purchased multiple varieties of grooming tools that each promise to work wonders. Many of these do work fairly well, however, for the dogs with the extra thick coat that includes an undercoat you have your work cut out for you.

These types of dogs, especially if kept inside will shed continually all year long. The problem is that if you brush them from the top you will remove a small portion of loose hair but what is really causing the shedding problem is the undercoat which you do not really see.

As your dogs body tries to determine whether it is changing seasons outside because he is subjected to cold and hot conditions when he goes out to potty and the regulated temperature within the house is a medium range of temperatures, his undercoat is changing.

If it is winter but there is a slight warming effect, your dog may start to lose his heavy undercoat because he thinks the season is changing to warm.

This can be easily remedied. For dogs with heavy fur the rake type of dog grooming equipment works very well. As this combs through the dogs hair it reaches the undercoat and grabs the loose underlying layers and pulls them out from under their blanketed top layer.

Most of the time the dog will love this because it feels great. He may have been itching before due to the excess hair loss and this will relieve that itchiness.

Be prepared if you have a dog that has long thick hair your grooming area will be covered by hair. It will be enough to cover another dog. I always recommend doing this in an area that is easy to clean or going outdoors.

In any case if you can do this daily the shedding will almost seem to disappear.

Dogs can be the very best pets you can have around and also, the most exasperating. I have a lovely Terrier whose eyes can convey empathy, sadness, or delightful joy. How they manage to do that, I dont know. It may be due to their extra-sensory ability. In this case, they could be your best friends who mourn with you when you are in pain, and "laugh" with you when you are happy.

But sometimes, they can take their toll on your patience. Imagine just having invested a lot of time, energy, and money on grooming your front yard and backyard lawn only to find your dog digging up everywhere. What can be more annoying?!

When this unlikely but possible event occurs, how do you stop your dog from digging up your precious lawn?

To start with, you need to understand the very nature of dogs. Dogs dig for a reason. You need to understand what the reason is because you might just end up making your dog unhappy by restraining it. Usually, dogs dig because of the perceived scent of something possibly buried in the lawn and they want to check what it is; or they may want to hide and protect their food or toys from intruders or other dogs. This is very common with dogs from an animal shelter.

On the other hand, bringing a dog home the first time, they have a tendency to want to smell everything around them including the lawn and flowerbeds. They also smell for the presence of another dog. Dogs may also want to dig up our lawn for lack of anything to do. They have a tendency to dig when bored.

So, how do you stop your dog from digging up your beautiful and well-tended lawn or yard?

1. Take your dog on a daily walk or run. Exercise has a calming effect on the dog and decreases the occasion of digging.

2. Do a research on their behavior. You never can tell, you might come up with something revealing. Usually, the more info you have on a dog, the easier it is to tame them, get them to respond to you and keep them from digging.

3. No scolding. Dogs tend to register scolding negatively. Avoid scolding it. If it does dig up your lawn, be patient. Train it not to dig up the yard. If it fulfills this command once, compensate it with a bone meal or something to make it realize that if it does not dig up the lawn, it will, be compensated

4. Finally, engaging the dog in an exercise training while maintaining yourself as the leader will enable it listen to you quicker and obey your commands.

Dogs are like children. They look to you for guidance. If you fail to give them this, they will do exactly as they please. You are their benefactor giving them food, shelter and nourishment. Knowing this, you must be the dominant figure in your pet's life. This does not mean that you must be violent or aggressive, but that you should be knowledgeable of your dog's bad habits and firmly and consistently steer him in another direction. By doing this, you will clearly identify yourself as being the alpha and boss of the household. He will still love and respect you and be eager to please.

Dogs will bark for various reasons. It is their way of communicating their feelings to humans and other animals. They will bark to warn their master of an intruder. They will bark to express fear, anger, hunger, loneliness or, if in the house, the need to go potty outside. So just listen to your dog and determine what he is trying to tell you. If living in the country, dogs will bark at night if they hear the coyotes howling, thereby setting a chorus of barking dogs within a nearby radius. This is just a "dog thing". You may have to bring him inside where he can't hear the howling.

If your dog persists on barking after you have made sure that his needs have been met, here are a few ideas you might try.

- Grab the dog by the collar, look him straight in the eyes and firmly, without yelling, give the command "no". If he ceases barking, immediately give him another command, such as "sit" or "lie down", and then reward him when he does so. Repeat this on several different occasions and eventually he will get the idea. If he does not stop barking after the command "no", close the dog's mouth and wrap your hand and fingers around it so as to form a muzzle. Then repeat the command no". Follow up with a different command and then praise him when he obeys.

- To keep an inside dog from barking when you are away from home, play some soft music. Close the blinds and drapes so nothing from the outside can distract him.

- If your dog is kept outside and neighbors complain that he barks continuously when you are away from home, go back to your house without letting the dog see you. Keep downwind so that he cannot pick up your scent. If he starts barking, rush to him angrily shaking a can full of stones and in a firm and commanding tone loudly say "no", all the time shaking his collar vigorously.

- Another method you might try is "clicker training". A clicker is a small rectangular plastic box with a metal button on top that clicks. When the dog barks and you firmly tell him "no", give him another command, suchas "sit", then click the little box when he sits and give him a treat. After a few times, the dog will realize that if he sits, he will get a treat. If he barks, he will not.

- If a dog requires a stronger behavior modification, there are several techniques that will help the dog associate his barking with a negative result. There are no bark collars that spray a citronella scent and make a sound that most dogs do not like. Also electronic collars offer different levels of stimulation through vibrations and sounds.

The above recommendations will work with most dogs. However, there are certain breeds that are just born to be barkers. These are in the hound family such as a foxhound, bloodhound, or basset hound. You might want to take this into consideration if you are thinking of getting one of these dogs.
